Divinity Letter From: Fiona Hughes Hello I was wondering if you could tell me anything about a bronze style coin presented by the Liverpool Collegiate as Prize for Divinity dated CXIX? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Fiona Hughes. Dear Ms Hughes, Thank you for your letter. I must admit that (to me) it would not seem to have a great chance of success. However, it is just this sort of thing that, some success can be very gratifying. In any case, some response could lead to other COBA members remembering other medals, possibly associated with this one. The date being "CXIX" is somewhat of a puzzle. If we use Wikipedia, to check out Roman Numbers; see :- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_numbers#Reading_Roman_numerals "C" is used to refer to the decimal value "100". "XIX" refers to the decimal "19". This would suggest a date of "119". This is not viable, for a Collegiate boy, but does sound partially correct. A more viable year might be (say 1919), which would be MXMXIX. I do feel that I am 'clutching at straws', here. Possibly some more mathematical member of COBA could be some help, in this respect. Cheers - Webmaster |
